For the month of April, I would like this blog to focus of the practical use of mindfulness in everyday life. For the next 30 days, I will use this forum to chronicle the highlights of my efforts to incorporate mindfulness into my daily living routine. Last summer, Diane and I attended a 5 day mindfulness retreat , where we were able to immerse ourselves totally in attending to the present moment. We left there feeling relaxed, refreshed, renewed and peaceful. Once we left the confines of the retreat, however, it became more difficult to stay in the mindfulness mode, given the fast paced, busy, multi-tasking lives that we all live. In addition, our minds are so busy, often dwelling on events of the past or worries about the future. Sometimes it just seems much easier, more comfortable and more efficient to stay in our auto-pilot mode. The down side to that, however, is that all that rushing around and distraction can result in an increase in stress, and also missing out on what is actually happening in the present moment, the only moment that is real: the past is gone, and the future is imagined. Mindfulness is not a difficult concept to learn, but it’s not always an easy task to control your attention……it takes effort and practice. Join me in my day-to-day journey using mindfulness as a tool to help benefit my emotional and physical health, as well as my relationships and my quality of life.
